A safe and fun alternative to YouTube

The Popsi and Krelle app is developed in a safe environment and an alternative to adverts and other videos on YouTube. The app includes videos, playlists, point and puzzle games and much more.

The app should be made by someone “in the know”

Popsi and Krelle are Denmark’s largest and best-known independent children’s band for children aged 0-4 years. They have created a universe with content that strengthens important skills and competences in young children.

Popsi and Krelle approached Makeable with the desire to create a safe environment for children to engage with their content. Until then, the majority of their content was on YouTube.

Popsi and Krelle also wanted to hand over full app responsibility to someone “in control” so that they could focus on creating enriching content for the children’s universe. “A bit like choosing a record label to release our records.”

A complete and safe kids’ universe

The solution was a subscription-based native app for iPhone and iPad where children can safely stream over 80 popular videos and interact with educational puzzle games.

There is still free content to be found on YouTube, but the app contains the real deal – the safe content – without the adverts and disturbing elements that usually come with YouTube. In other words, the app ensures that the kids stay in Popsi and Krelle’s universe and don’t wander off into related videos. There is also a lot of exclusive content in the app that is not available anywhere else – such as the many games.

Great features for the benefit of both children and adults

Popsi and Krelle’s universe was originally built around children’s songs and videos. Everything from well-known children’s songs to new songs produced by themselves.

We challenged them and suggested an expansion with educational games that support children’s development to broaden the universe. Today, the app includes videos as well as puzzle and finding games. All supported by fun sounds and inspiring music.

The video platform in the app is built around the Vimeo streaming platform, so the app itself is not so “heavy” to have on a smartphone or tablet. In addition, Vimeo ensures that Popsi and Krelle can work in a familiar environment when maintaining the content in the app.

Playlists and a search function make it easy for parents to find the right content for their children. For example, select the “Goodnight songs” playlist or search for all Christmas songs.

Full control via user-friendly backend

The app is based on a headless CMS + Google Firebase, so Popsi and Krelle can easily and effortlessly update and add content and create playlists themselves.

The solution has been created through close collaboration, where we at Makeable have acted as both technical specialists and sparring partners on strategy, business, etc. There are also a lot of extensions in the pipeline that we are working on together.
